History of the Far North Region

Significant historical data for the region are:

The pre-Guiziga era (17th century)

The colonial period (1902 - 1960)

The German occupation (1902-1915) under the reign of Sultan Saajo

The French period (1915-1960), construction of two bridges in Maroua (Pont Vert 1952, Pont Rouge 1980)

Independence: Establishment of the Extreme North Region (1983): After the former Northern Province was divided into three regions, the region Far North has been created (former provinces were now calles regions). The Far North consists of 6 departments, 43 arrondissements, 45 communes and 4 districts.
